Grandpa Reed's Early Morning Phone Calls

My grandpa used to call at the earliest hours of the morning -
usually between 6 and 7 AM!!
Can you believe the nerve!!
Actually it wasn't that bad except when I was a kid,
my dad and stepmom used to sleep late
and you talk about someone flipping out!
She would be so upset when they would get woke up.
I can understand that.
When I get to lie in bed with David and just appreciate the time
to do nothing but snuggle.
I totally get it.
But I was just thinking about how nice now it would be
to get those early morning calls again.
My grandpa died in 1998.
My kids didn't know him, even though Trevor was nearly 8,
they just didn't.
I didn't know him very well.
Grandpa was a farmer.
He lived through the
Great Depression.
His wife, my grandma, died when my dad was 8,
leaving 5 kids for him to care for.
He never really talked much.
Kept a lot locked up inside.
Never told his children or grandchildren that he loved them.
That really bothers me for my dad and his sisters.
Even though Grandpa showed them love,
I know they needed to hear it.
My dad now gets up around 4 in the morning.
He has for years.
I know that there have been some things happen
since Grandpa died
that Daddy could have used the advice
and reassurances of his dad.
Not that he would have sought it out,
but we all know it's comforting to know it's there if you need it.
I bet he'd give anything to get an "early" morning call,
with a loud "Morning!!" on the other end.

In the moment of the phone calls, they can be annoying, but looking back, there is certainly some fondness to it!

It's an old saying that you don't know what you've got until it's gone. And sometimes I find that the things that annoyed me most are the things that I miss most. I guess that is the great irony of life.

This was beautifully written and I appreciate the reminder to meet people where they are and enjoy them and their quirks while we have them.

Have a great week.
